How to Export a Vault Private Key

Overview

The Export Vault Private Key feature allows users to securely extract the private keys associated with their Tholos vaults. This action can be performed offline or online through the Tholos mobile app. However, it should only be done when absolutely necessary and comes with significant responsibilities and risks.

Important Warnings

Keep the Private Key Secret — The private key is highly sensitive information. Do not share it with anyone, as it grants full control over the associated wallets.

Risks of Exposure — Anyone who obtains the private key can access and control the funds.

Move Assets Immediately — After exporting the private key, transfer all assets to a secure location as soon as possible to minimize potential risks.

Process Overview

Exporting a private key through the Tholos mobile app involves three primary steps:

  1. Select Private Key — Choose the private key you wish to export from the list of available keys.
  2. Send Secret Shares — Participants must send their Secret Shares to the user designated to export the private key.
  3. Export Private Key — Once all Secret Shares are combined, the private key can be exported securely.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Select Private Key

  1. Open the Tholos mobile app and navigate to the “Private Keys” section.
  2. Review the list of organizations or vaults and select the desired private key.
  3. Confirm your selection to proceed.

Step 2: Preparation Before Export

  1. Ensure you have the following:
    • The listed number of participants to provide their Secret Shares.
    • The Tholos mobile app installed on all devices.
    • A trusted environment for the process.
    • A backup plan to store the exported key securely.
  2. Verify that participants are available and ready to share their Secret Shares.
  3. Read and acknowledge the warnings.
  4. Swipe to confirm and begin.

Step 3: Send Secret Shares

  1. Share your Secret Share using the app interface.
  2. Wait for other participants to send their Secret Shares.
  3. Confirm receipt of all necessary shares.

Step 4: Combine Secret Shares and Export

  1. Add the received Secret Shares through the app.
  2. Once all shares are combined, the private key will be ready for export.

Step 5: Secure the Private Key

  1. Choose an encryption password for the private key (minimum 12 characters).
